An Interview with “Lauren from I love Linen”

I met Lauren Roe from “I love Linen” on Instagram a few months ago – you too can follow her feed here. I quite liked her pillow case designs from The Bedroom Society collection and I thought you might like them too. Aren’t they fun?? They are 100% screen printed by hand, in limited edition print runs. I do heart small business and I like unique, small scale runs even more ;-).

This post is an interview of sorts because I am really quite interested in how things happen for other creative people. “The process” interests me greatly and I believe that everyone has an interesting journey to tell. I plan to do more of these style posts in the near future – I hope you like. Rx

How long have you been part of the I Love Linen Group?

– For about 2 years, time has flown actually!

When did you realise that designing was something you wanted to do as a career? And when did that all fall into place for you?

I’ve worked in creative industries for a while in PR/Marketing and have long been interested in fashion and design, and many of my friends are quite successful designers so maybe it rubbed off on me! What happened actually is that my family had built up a successful ‘bricks and mortar’ linen business in QLD, and then my dad got quite sick and something sort of just felt right about joining the family business part time while I maintained my Marketing job. My first step was to create an online boutique, and then I knew that ultimately I would curate a range of sourced goods and pieces I designed myself. I wanted to retail online for about 12 months though to see what items sold really well, as that would give me a good insight into what customers are looking for.

I approached the design process with the idea of creating bedrooms that are beautiful in their simplicity but have lovely pops of colour – a nice balance between restraint and playfulness. That’s why all my quilt covers are very simple in colour and design, and then the pillow cases I designed are the smaller decorative items that I want customers to have fun with. The process started around the same time I had my baby in June last year, so it’s been pretty hectic actually!

The Bedroom Society sheetsI am inspired by….

My friends, who are all very creative people who are now very successful in their chosen fields – we’re that little bit older and it’s nice to see how well everyone is doing. And travelling is always a great inspiration.

2014_05_12How do you manage your work, life, family balance

As a working mama with a 10 month old baby I feel like I just move one minute to the other!

Which is your favourite design from your new label “The Bedroom Society Collection”?

I love all my prints equally actually, each one is a reflection of my personal style! Since living in Tokyo in my 20s I became obsessed with spots and stripes, then as I matured I began to appreciate dyeing techniques like dip-dye, and then of late fruit has been my latest crush so these pieces show my pattern loves of the past and present actually.

Trends you most love….

I am really loving copper for Autumn Winter – I want a nice copper bed side lamp!

Lastly, which of the following do you prefer

Red or Pink lippy? RED all the way!

Cross or Taxidermy? CROSS – I bought a few back from Bali last week actually

Heels or thongs? HEELS!

Blooms or palms? PALMS because although I love flowers, PALMS don’t require as much TLC and I am too busy to be a green thumb 🙂

Do enjoy your weekend!
