The subject matter of her artworks and exploration is capturing moments in time.

Often her works are created using abandoned old photographs, where she recreates specific – moments whilst exploring the notion of what remains after a moment in time passes. Her works deliberately try to avoid sentimentality. In doing so, her characters are not – overly embellished with emotive or physical details. Typically seeing the facial attributes of her characters being painted with a very broad brush stroke; Clara does this so that viewers can find perspective from their identity’s in order to examine the timelessness of the human condition.

Similar to the vague recollections of an ageing mind, Clara Adolphs paintings capture histories and brief rendezvous. Adolphs fascination with old photos and the life stories they represent, are intended to be a study on mortality whilst adressing the impermanence of memory.

That said, the monochromatic tones and striking nature of her works with their typically – thick and expertly applied paint strokes are powerfully moody and thought provoking in the most delicious way. Speaking from a broad design and interiors point of view, the dramatic and stunning play on rich tones paired with the largely modernistic – style of her works make for jaw-droppingly beautiful and ironically entirely – memorable artworks for the home. Clara Adolphs Creatures will be exhibited at Edwina Corlette Gallery on Brunswick St, Newfarm Brisbane from August 3rd – 24th.
